Whit had stepped outside just as she saw the red truck pull through the gate. She walked to the garden and began picking fresh vegetables. It wasn't long before she heard Eli's laughter and Whit walked to the end of the row and peeked through the branches. She could see Eli, and watched as she threw a frisbee for a beautiful, blue-coated dog. “Aww, isn't that sweet,” she spoke aloud as she watched Eli kneel and hug the dog.

“I'm glad you came home early,” she whispered.

Eli felt a breeze blow across her neck and heard a whisper too low to make out. She looked toward Whit's cabin but didn't see any sign of movement. Today is our day. Tomorrow we will go next door to visit.

When Eli had unloaded the truck, she walked out and sat on the porch steps. Cruz had wandered outside and was busy exploring. When she heard Eli's boots on the wooden floor, she rushed to her owner.

“Come over here pretty girl,” Eli called, patting the step next to her, and Cruz climbed up beside her.

“You like our new home?” Cruz licked her hand and ducked her head under Eli's arm. Eli draped it across the dog's body and pulled her close. “I sure have missed you. I promise nothing will come between us again.” Cruz laid her head down in her lap, and Eli's hand stroked down her body. Her dog’s thick fur was soft and warm on her palm. She enjoyed the time with just the two of them as they looked across their front yard. “Do you want to go for a ride?”

Cruz's ears perked, and she jumped down the steps. “Let me go to the bathroom and grab the keys.” Eli walked into the downstairs bath, and Cruz was hot on her trail. “I won’t leave you.” She chuckled and washed her hands, then grabbed a fresh bottle of water. She plucked the keys off the counter. “Let's ride.”

They walked out to the barn, and Cruz sniffed the ground as Eli pulled out one of the Gators.

“Hop in,” she called and patted the seat beside her. Cruz jumped into the seat. “Hold on, it gets bumpy,” she warned as she sent the Gator forward up the trail toward the top of the mountain. Cruz's head swiveled from left to right as they ascended the trail and Eli pulled into the field where Mark's family cabin would sit. She slowed to a stop and stepped out of the Gator, walking toward the stream. Cruz's ears heard the rushing water, and she ran ahead of Eli. Other than the Gulf, Eli realized Cruz had never seen a stream or river. She observed Cruz as she stepped onto the rocks at the bank of the stream and dipped her muzzle into the running water. She took a tentative drink and looked at Eli.

“Tastes good, doesn't it?”
